The Wisdom Approach to Hormonal Acne

At Wisdom, we understand how frustrating hormonal acne can be at all stages of life... but with the right testing and support, relief and healing is possible.

Here are the primary factors that contribute to hormonal acne and the key areas our personalized testing covers so that we can provide our members with the exact formulas and protocols to help rebalance your physiology.

✔ Androgen Hormones:

Androgens, especially testosterone, stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin to produce more sebum. Higher levels of androgens can lead to excess oil production, which can clog pores and contribute to acne formation.

✔ Estrogen Levels:

Fluctuations in estrogen levels relative to androgens can also impact acne. For instance, a relative decrease in estrogen compared to androgens can exacerbate acne symptoms.

✔ Puberty:

Hormonal acne often starts during puberty when hormone levels surge, leading to increased sebum production and acne outbreaks.

✔ Menstrual Cycle:

Women commonly experience hormonal acne flare-ups around the time of menstruation due to fluctuations in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle.

✔ Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS):

PCOS is associated with hormonal imbalances, including higher levels of androgens, which can contribute to acne.

✔ Stress:

Stress can trigger hormonal changes that affect acne. Stress hormones like cortisol can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, worsening acne.

✔ Medications:

Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, androgenic medications (e.g., anabolic steroids), and hormonal contraceptives, can influence hormone levels and contribute to hormonal acne.
