Meet our staff:

Dr. Sara Hazel
Functional Doctor
I have been a Naturopathic doctor and educator since 1998. Through private practices, formal classroom teaching, teaching in medical centers, seminars, and talks I have taught and treated thousands of students and patients over two decades in natural medicine. I have a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from The National College of Naturopathic Medicine. I have also been a full-time professor of clinical and academic studies at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine for a decade and served as Interim Chair of General Medicine and on the SCNM Board of Trustees. I have taught in massage schools and medical imaging programs, and have additional training in acupuncture, Qi Gong, Oriental Medicine, and various massage techniques from the Oregon School of Massage and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. I am a certified Yoga Instructor and registered with Yoga Alliance. I am a graduate of the National College of Naturopathic Medicine’s Qi Gong Certificate Program. My mission is to have each one of us actualize the power and potential we were born with.  If we can unlock that power we will benefit more than just ourselves. We can become a force of balance and change and grace on the planet.

My Story

When I was at the height of my career as a doctor, teacher, mother, and businesswoman I got acute heavy metal poisoning from an enamel tea pot that had lost its enamel (unbeknownst to me). This resulted in severe fatigue, body pain, kidney and heart dysfunction, weight gain, vison changes, brain fog, and other symptoms. I faced an uphill battle against the conflicting demands of work, family, responsibilities, and my own rapidly declining health. Did I mention I was also going through perimenopause? I am forever grateful that my training and years of experience as a naturopathic doctor, acupuncturist, yoga, and qi gong practitioner gave me the tools I needed to personally apply the knowledge I had applied for years in the service of my patients. The ancient wisdom of various traditional medical paradigms and the best of modern science allowed me to navigate my personal journey back to optimal health while given me greater insight to the struggles my patients were also faced with.  On a profound level, I understood now that we were all in this together. My professional practice has always specialized in the simplest and most powerful aspects of functional natural medicine for chronic illness, longevity medicine, and stubborn health conditions. After my own healing journey, it crystalized for me that simple changes can be the hardest but most necessary. I discovered the very profound importance of prioritizing the emotional and mental processes that support the hard work of changing our mindset, our habits, and emotional patterns. Mindset is essential. Now, even if I am prescribing diet, medications, supplements, lifestyle changes, or other natural therapies, I spend the time to ensure my patients get to the heart of who they are and WHY they need to change and heal.  Transformative medicine is the purpose of my practice. Helping others find the inspiration, tricks, and tools to save themselves is my passion.

Why I love being a Naturopathic Physician

The heart of functional medicine is the principle of empowering individuals to correct and restore themselves through self-knowledge and working intelligently with nature. There is no greater reward than participating in someone’s return and rediscovery of their own vibrancy and power.

What I love outside of work

Meditation, sauna, COLD PLUNGE, Yoga, Qi Gong, traveling, my kid, my off-grid retreat I’m creating in Arizona.
